We had a great season at 4500 Harford Road and would like to thank everyone for coming out and supporting all of our fabulous vendors. We could not have been such a success without you.

So, I promise this is going to be my last apple specific market post... I just can't help but share all the fabulous things that you can do with apples!

The market can provide you with three of the most important ingredients in the following recipe: apples, eggs, and flour

Apples: Tony Fetters Fruit Farm can provide you with a wide range of apple selections, and if you are nice he will even let you sample them to find the perfect apple for your usage

Eggs: There is always at least one vendor selling eggs, with the possibility of three different vendors each week: Sunnyside Farm, Liberty Delights, and Ferguson Family Farm

Flour: Sunnyside Farm is generously providing our market customers with delicious Yeehaw Farm flour. This is one of a kind wheat flour, that has been grown on the family farm for more then 60 years without the aid of chemicals, not even approved for organic application types, at anytime! This whole wheat flour will give you a whole new perspective on flour.

Delicious Apple Muffins

Recipe adapted from Deborah Madison's: Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone

2 1/2 Cups flour

2 teaspoons baking powder

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 - 3/4 Cup packed light brown sugar

2 eggs, lightly beaten

1 1/3 Cup buttermilk

1/3 Cup canola oil or melted butter

1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Preheat oven to 375 degrees

Grease muffin tins

Mix dry ingredients in one bowl

Mix wet ingredients in another bowl

Mix the two bowls together - but don't beat the batter

Stir into batter

1 Cup apples, diced

1 teaspoon lemon or orange zest

Raisins and Walnuts are other fun options to add to these muffins

Spoon into muffin pans and bake until well risen and slightly brown, approximately 25min.

Enjoy, perhaps with some scrambled eggs...

1. Autumn weather! How can you go wrong with beautiful crisp weather like we have been having? And what better way to enjoy this fine weather then browsing the market!?

2. APPLES! Apples are perfect by themselves, baked in the oven, shredded into salads, sliced in a sandwich, or mixed into a dish of sausage and risotto.

3. Fundraisers and awesome people who support them. The Red Zebra will be donating $1 per pizza sale at this weeks market to the Hamilton Crop Circle. Check out Hamilton Crop Circles current fundraising initiative and help the cause for urban agriculture in Baltimore City!

4. Music. There is nothing like a little jam session by a bonfire on a nippy evening. Since there isn't a bonfire and it hasn't gotten that cold yet, I'll settle for the wonderful alternative of listening to Queen Earth at the market. If you missed her last week, she will be starting the market off again this week, performing between 4-5:30ish. Come Check her out!

5. Fall Vegetables. Yes, I get excited about fall vegetables. How can you resist dark leafy greens? Beets? Winter Squash? Pumpkins? Mushrooms? I could go on for awhile, but I'll spare you. Regardless, what better place to pick up some fresh local veggies than the market? Plus we are VERY HAPPY to welcome Twin Compass back to the market after a few weeks of struggling through field damages. So come check out their selection of fall produce and welcome them back to the market!

Can you believe it?

Despite the market wrapping up shortly, we are still keeping things exciting and have new things that you need to make sure to check out this week.

1. Pressed Paninis: Hunger Management is excited to have joined our market for the remainder of the season. You may have seen them while wandering around the Fell's Point Farmers Market. Their delicious smelling brick-pressed panini will have you lining up at their tent within moments of arriving at the market.

2. This week we are proud to welcome Queen Earth. She will be providing us with her beautiful tunes and soothing voice. She will be playing from 4-6 tomorrow, so come on out and show her your farmers market love.

3. Hamilton Crop Circle will begin providing market goers with fresh lettuce and other greens from their on-site market garden. How much more local could one get? Check out the garden patch and then enjoy your fresh greens. Also, check them out on twitter!

getting reacquainted with the oven

Long summer days go hand in hand with hours spent grilling outside. Now that the sun is setting quite earlier and cooler weather is setting in, it is time to get reacquainted with our ovens.

Apples from Tony Fetters that would be perfect for your roast chicken

Luckily, we can still acquire all that is necessary for a nice fall roasted chicken at the market. Here is a delicious recipe, provided by Sunnyside Farm.

What you need:

1 Whole Chicken (approx. 3.5lbs) - available at Sunnyside Farm

2 Onions Chunked - available at Zahradka Farm

2 Apples, unpeeled and chunked - available at Tony Fetters Farm

2 stalks of Celery, chopped - available at Zahradka Farm

Fill the cavity of the chicken with the onions, apples, and celery.

Place in a deep roasting pan.

Then you'll need (hopefully these are in your pantry, but if you need some amazing honey, Sunnyside Farm can provide you with some delicious honey):

1/4 Cup Vegetable Oil

1 Tablespoon Honey

1 Tablespoon Lime Juice

1/4 Teaspoon Paprika

Salt

Mix the ingredients in a saucepan until the honey is melted.

Rub all over the chicken. Continue applying sauce to the chicken 3-4 times during the cooking, or until it is nicely browned.

Bake in the oven at 360 degree Fahrenheit for 1 hour (plus 15-30 min. depending on the size of the chicken)

Upon taking out of the oven, cover tightly with tin foil and let stand for 15-20min. before serving. Enjoy!

The garden patch at the market a few weeks ago, just imagine what it looks like now? Come check it out.

Also, for those of you who may have been confused as to why the market last week was lacking on the vegetable and fresh produce front, I just wanted to remind everyone that farms are still experiencing great losses and difficulties from Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee.

They will hopefully all return to the market soon. In the mean time, Sunnyside Farm and Liberty Delights can provide you with fresh poultry and meat products. Our on-site garden, courtesy of Hamilton Crop Circle, will also be providing us with fresh greens! So don't worry there are still plenty of fresh goods for you to enjoy. In the meantime, just remember that it isn't easy being a farmer.

Autumn has swept in

With the overnight arrival of Autumn has come an array of cooler weather goods for you to enjoy at the market.

APPLES! Personally, I could not be happier that apple season has arrived, and this will not be the last mention of these lovely fruits. Come stop by Tony Fetters Fruit Farm and sample an apple slice or sip of apple cider. How can you resist?

Izzy's Chocolate has finally arrived at the market! Now that the hot weather has broken, she is able to provide us with delicious and unique chocolates. Among the flavors that she brought last week were apricot, coconut, and plum. Come satisfy your chocolate craving at the market tomorrow.

While the weather has changed, it is still beautiful weather to dine al fresco. After wandering around the market for a little while, why not grab a glass of wine or seasonal cocktail at The Chameleon Cafe, located right across the street. With a farm-to-table focus, you will also find an array of delicious appetizers filled with all your favorite seasonal flavors.

With all these exciting cool weather market happenings, come stop by and see for yourself!

As there is currently no massive rain storms, flooding, hurricanes, earthquakes, or tornados on the forecast for tomorrow... don't forget to come stop by the market and pick up those late summer vegetables that will soon be replaced with mountains of apples, winter squash, and pumpkins.

Peppers and Eggplants from Zahradka Family Farm

There seems to be a never ending supply of eggplants in my kitchen this summer. Believe me, I am by no means complaining! Ratatouille (No, not the adorable rat-chef movie), Baba Ganoush, Eggplant Parmesan, Roasted Eggplant, Grilled Eggplant, Eggplant Pizza (both as a topping and as a crust substitute), Eggplant salads, the list is never ending for the amount of eggplant dishes I have eaten and prepared this summer.

Recently, I came across a Roasted Eggplant Soup recipe. I have yet to try it, but it is on my list to create this week after I gather up even more eggplants from the market. What a great way to ease into fall with a hearty eggplant soup.

[WARNING: I may have just been attracted to the beautiful photographs in the roasted eggplant soup recipe. I'll let you know how it actually turns out!]

For those of you who may not know, this week (September 12th-16th) is Maryland Homegrown School Lunch Week! So make sure that your kids have their fair share of fresh, local, and healthy goods from none other, but the market. Also to take note - Maryland is the ONLY state in the country that has 100% participation from all of its public school systems! Continue to keep your kids well feed through the school year by visiting your farmers market.

the ending of summer

Where has the summer gone? In a swirl of hot weather and farmers markets it seems to have flown by.

If you haven't gotten enough of peaches, corn, watermelon, and tomatoes, now is the time to stock up, because they will be gone before we know it!

Now is also a very important time to be supporting your farmers due to the damage that was caused by Hurricane Irene.

While you may have been struggling with electrical outages and small issues such as having to throw away food from an temporarily disabled refrigerator, farmers were having much bigger issues. Field and crop flooding, lack of electricity for their poultry and cattle, and thousands of dollars in property damage are just the tip of the problems faced by many of farmers last weekend.

So when you see some beet greens that might not be as darkly colored as normal or some slightly yellowed parsley, don't make a big deal, but rather savor the unique storm battered product that you are getting and the thank the farmer that you are supporting.

Also, can you believe it? Only 8 more weeks of the Tuesday Market! We hope that you have been enjoying it and would really like your feedback, good and bad. If you are still struggling through the damage done by Hurricane Irene this weekend, we have the perfect solutions for you tomorrow at the market.

Still out of electricity? Why not stop by one of our newest market vendors and pick up a creatively decorated candle! The Happy Place features candles in wine glasses, mugs, and tea pots, among other creative holders. Maria makes the candles and her daughter paints some of them, so you can take home a truly unique design. After you use your candle, why not have a drink out of your new beverage holder? Two great uses with one purchase. I approve!

If your power is still out, then chances are you are going to need to get some dinner while you are out and about, so why not enjoy it at the Tuesday Market? ... a fat pig?

Maybe not.

But there are lots of other wonderful things to purchase each week at the Tuesday Market.

Vendors at the Tuesday Market

This week, perhaps you will venture to think ahead to those cooler fall and winter days when all you want is a nice sun ripened tomato, which of course is long gone from markets at that point. BUT, alas, you can savor your favorite summer tomatoes in the cooler weather by making tomato sauce with them now!

All the the ingredients for you to make a simple tomato sauce can conveniently be found at none other, but the farmers market.

What you need:

Tomatoes, lets say 5-7lbs, skinned and chopped - Whole tomatoes available at Hamilton Heirlooms, Twin Compass, Tony Fetters Fruit Farm, and Zahradka Family Farm. (My suggestion: buy a few from each, that way you can concoct a nice flavorful mixture of tomatoes.)

One onion minced - found at either Twin Compass or Zahradka Family Farm

A few cloves of garlic (depending on how much you love it) finely chopped - found at Twin Compass

Olive Oil (about 1-2 Tablespoons) - found at Hamilton Heirlooms

A bunch of basil finely chopped - you can take home a whole plant from God Scent Herbs

Salt and Pepper - Hopefully found in your kitchen

Chopped tomatoes poured on top of the sizzling onions and garlic

Now that you have all your market goodies...

1. Warm up the Olive Oil in a large pot.

2. Once warmed, add in garlic and onions. Stir until lightly browned.

3. Pour in chopped tomatoes. Cook down until desired thickness of sauce is reached.

4. Stir in basil, and season with salt and pepper to taste.

5. Let cool and freeze for enjoyment all winter long!

Sauce can also be enjoyed with an assortment of meat products provided by

Liberty Delight Farms and Sunnyside Farms.

This week at the Tuesday Market, we will be featuring a wonderful musician from the tropical state of Hawaii.

Bo Lozoff is in town and we are lucky to have him joining us this week. Bo is also the co-founder, with his wife, of the Human Kindness Foundation in North Carolina and the Prison-Ashram Project.

In other market news, for those of you who haven't noticed, Trang Nguyen of the old and loved Saigon Remembered, has set up shop at the Tuesday Market!

She has been doing so well that she has sold out the past two weeks, so if you want some of her delicious Vietnamese Food you better get there early.

We also had a new vendor join our team last week. Jimi, aka Spoonman, who is a regular at many other markets around the area, showed off his amazing flatware jewelry, as seen above. Talk about a good way to reuse and recycle those unwanted utensils! Not that you often have unwanted, antique, sterling silver flatware... Thanks Jimi for taking care of that issue for us!

NATIONAL FARMERS MARKET WEEK

(Aug. 7th- Aug. 13th)

Reasons to love and celebrate farmers markets, especially the Tuesday Market:

1. Fresh, local, healthy produce! What more could you ask for? Look out for some of these things that are currently in season: corn, tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, peppers, eggs, honey, cantaloupes, eggplants, and peaches are just a few!

Bees and Tomatoes: Pick Your Poison

There are those who despise the taste, smell, and texture of tomatoes... and then there are those, like me, who count down the days until that wonderful summer afternoon when tomato season arrives in full force.

I am happy to report that that day has most certainly arrived!

Stop by Hamilton Heirlooms tomorrow to try, none other but, their collection of Heirloom tomatoes. Their selection will be increasing with the season, so make sure to stop by each week for a different variety!

And the excitement continues at the market in our fourth week of the season!

If you haven't stopped in yet, you are missing out on some very exciting Tuesday evenings.

"Color Light Theory" has been entertaining us for the past couple of weeks with their toe tapping and hula hoop swinging beats.

"Color Light Theory" can be found at the Market between 6-8pm

Last week we also had some other energetic musicians, Norm Bull and Mike Carrington, providing us with wonderful sounds that helped relax the atmosphere even more. If you too are interested in playing some music at the market stop by the Hamilton-Lauraville Main Street tent and tells us about you and your music!

When you stop by the Market this week make sure to check out our brand new street mural, on Harford Road. The mural is the city's first horizontal street mural and connects the Hamilton-Lauraville corridor to its agricultural past and present. The mural was painted this past Sunday during the Lauraville Business Association Block Party and was lead by artist Whitney Frazier and other members of Hamilton Arts Collective. Thank you to everyone that was involved, you did a great job!

No matter which farmers market you attend, although we hope that you are coming to ours, you come for a reason.

That reason may be to get local fruits, vegetables, eggs, or any variety of meat.

That reason could be to grab breakfast, lunch, dinner, or any meal in-between from a valued vendor.

Hamilton Bakery providing us with fresh baked goodies, as well as refreshing lemonade, all with a smile.

That reason could be to socialize, hang out with neighbors, or to meet new people.

Whatever that reason is, it is important to support your favorite markets. The American Farmland Trust is holding their annual "America's Favorite Farmers Market" contest and you can help get your favorite farmers markets noticed by voting for them online. When you support your local farmers markets you aren't just standing up for healthy produce and regional farmers, but you are also supporting and saving the agricultural land that produce your favorite fruits, vegetables, and grains and provides food for other animals. So go ahead and vote for the farmer, the market, and your support for the land!

A great start to the market season!

Opening day of the Tuesday Market in Lauraville was fantastic!

We had about 30 different vendors, wonderful music provided by the local steel drum band, hula hoops galore, and an overall relaxed evening filled with neighbors and friends.

If you missed last week thats OKAY, because tomorrow is Tuesday and another market day!

Here are a few pictures of the excitement that took over 45oo Harford Road last Tuesday, hope to see you tomorrow!

The day has finally arrived... the opening of the Tuesday Market in Lauraville!

Don't forget to stop by between 4-8pm at 4500 Harford Road to check out the great variety of vendors!

Some things to look out for include ice cream from Red Canoe, fresh baked bread from Hamilton Bakery, wood fired pizza from The Red Zebra, beautiful stained glass from Fabulous Glass, fresh eggs from Sunnyside Farm, and vegetables galore from Zahradka Family Farm and Twin Compass Farm! And that isn't even a quarter of the vendors!

Also this evening, we will be having live musical entertainment provided by the Steel Drum Band, based out of Hamilton-Lauraville, performing between 6-8!

Growing up we are always taught that location is the most important element to success. Be it a perfectly slopped vineyard in Italy that produces the best grapes or a sought after plot of land that will soon be home to a farmers market, the location is the first point of discussion.

When the market began three short years ago this was its original home and proved to be a great success. We are extremely excited to welcome the market back to this loved piece of land and hope that you too will welcome it into your Tuesday evening schedule.

With the arriving warmer weather the chickens at Sunnyside Farm can be seen frolicking in their fresh pastures on any given day. If they aren't running around or basking in the suns warm rays, then they can be seen chowing down on some delicious fresh grass or hanging out with their loving caretakers, Dru Peters and Homer Walden.

Sunnyside Farm, located in Dover, Pennsylvania, is home to a variety of cows, pigs, turkeys, vegetable patches, hens and of course chickens. Each day the chickens get a fresh new piece of land to play in and feed on lush blades of grass and any other natural goodies they may find in the pastures (such as earth worms and clover.)

The chickens of Sunnyside Farm will be available at the Tuesday Market in Lauraville, but prior to our season beginning you can find them around the Baltimore area quite frequently.
