Final Countdown

With just 10 days to go we have now reached our final countdown for the opening of the 2012 Tuesday Market in Lauraville season!

Make sure to check out the updated official vendor list, and then swing by on opening day to welcome your favorite (and soon to be favorite) vendors to the market on Tuesday, June 6th from 4pm-8pm.

To get prepared for the upcoming market season, you may want to...

1. Dust off your market basket or bag, so that you can fill it to the brim with fresh goodies.

2. Find the perfect hat to shade your face while wandering around the market in the late afternoon sun.

3. Check out the Maryland's Best website to find out exactly what is currently in season, and what you can get excited about in the coming months.

4. Get your camera ready and take pictures documenting your time at the market. If you feel like sharing your pictures with other market goers, you can post your pictorial experiences on the Real Time Farms website, as well as connect with other local farms and restaurants.

See you on June 6th!

Art Projects

It can be really nice to sit down and do an art project every once in awhile. You know, take out your random box of art supplies that includes everything from scissors and glue sticks to glitter and foam animals. Anything goes in art boxes, the more random, the better.

Hamilton-Lauraville Main Street is pulling out their large art supply box, along with their exciting PNC and Baltimore Office of Promotions & The Arts grant that they were recently granted. With a slightly more organized art box then you might find at your house, the Transformative Art Project grant will provide the area with exciting public art forms.

Currently there are two projects in the works that will address the ongoing and historical presence of urban agriculture in the area, adding on to the two street murals that were put into place last year.

The first of these design ideas include a large carrot sticking out of the soon to be open Green Onion space, located on the corner of Harford Road and Hamilton Avenue.

The second design project will be located on the market lot, and will consist of a large basket on the roof, filled to the brim with market goodies, and have berries falling from the basket creating seating around the market lot.

We hope that you are as excited about these innovative art projects as we are! Stay tuned for more art and market updates, as we slowly slide closer to opening day. In the mean time, crack open that old art supply box of yours and get to your own creative projects.

I told you, I love apples

So, I promise this is going to be my last apple specific market post... I just can't help but share all the fabulous things that you can do with apples!

Photograph by: Delancey Nelson

The market can provide you with three of the most important ingredients in the following recipe: apples, eggs, and flour

Apples: Tony Fetters Fruit Farm can provide you with a wide range of apple selections, and if you are nice he will even let you sample them to find the perfect apple for your usage

Eggs: There is always at least one vendor selling eggs, with the possibility of three different vendors each week: Sunnyside Farm, Liberty Delights, and Ferguson Family Farm

Flour: Sunnyside Farm is generously providing our market customers with delicious Yeehaw Farm flour. This is one of a kind wheat flour, that has been grown on the family farm for more then 60 years without the aid of chemicals, not even approved for organic application types, at anytime! This whole wheat flour will give you a whole new perspective on flour.

Delicious Apple Muffins
Recipe adapted from Deborah Madison's: Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone

2 1/2 Cups flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 - 3/4 Cup packed light brown sugar
2 eggs, lightly beaten
1 1/3 Cup buttermilk
1/3 Cup canola oil or melted butter
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Preheat oven to 375 degrees
Grease muffin tins

Mix dry ingredients in one bowl
Mix wet ingredients in another bowl
Mix the two bowls together - but don't beat the batter

Stir into batter
1 Cup apples, diced
1 teaspoon lemon or orange zest
Raisins and Walnuts are other fun options to add to these muffins

Spoon into muffin pans and bake until well risen and slightly brown, approximately 25min.
Enjoy, perhaps with some scrambled eggs...
